Frank Mahlow, GER141 blev bedste RJ85 i Fyn Rundt 2000. Her er hans beretning om turen:

From my point of view the short time we needed to go round Fyn is mostly really luck.

The crew sailed the first time together on the boat and regatta at all. For this reason we were in fear to have trouble with other boats and had a very bad start. This was OK for us, so the other boats could show us the right way. But we had a new spinnaker and took it out shortly after start.

The hard blast that damaged Mikaels gennaker surprised us very much too and we had a nearly uncontrolled run under spi and were very happy not having lost spinnaker and mast when the blast decreased.

But after this run we had only 3 boats in front of us, so we were happy the first boats of second start overhauled us to show us the way.

We crossed to Middelfart and had the feeling nearly all boats are faster than us but we took the course near the coast for smaller waves like the most folkeboats. In Middelfart Sund I gave the rudder to my crew who has diving experience in the Sund. So we were able to use a good stream through that Sund.

The course to Svendborg Sund was unspectacular, we tried to reach the speed of the other boats. From Lyø we set the spinnaker again up to Svendborg. I think at this time we had luck with the stream that was with us through Svendborg Sund and changed direction after we were through. We tried to set the spinnaker again but failed because the skipper was too tired.

The crew sent me to bed and sailed northward to Kerteminde with genoa 1. They must have done this very good and had luck again with the wind direction that changed in a way that we nearly reached Kertemninde without crossing the wind. Other boats sailed far out in the belt and lost a lot of time.

We saw no boat behind us and thought we would be the last reaching the finishing line. Big surprise to see the notification. But I can say we had a lot of fun and my crew said let’s do it next year again.

Kind regards
Frank Mahlkow, GER 141
